Flag ratio: 2:3

The national flag of Gambia, designed by Pa Louis Thomasi1, consists of a horizontal tricolour of red, blue and green. The colours are separated by white stripes. The red at the top symbolises the sun, as well as the savanna. Below the red is blue that symbolises the Gambia River that flows through the nation. The green symbolises the land, and also the forests of the nation. The white portions represent peace. The flag was adopted on February 18, 1965, the day it became fully independent of Britain. The flag of the Gambia has no political basis. The blue stripe of the flag represents the River Gambia flowing between the green forest and the red savanna.
