Fuheis (Arabic: الفحيص) is a Christian town 20 kilometers northwest1 of Amman, Jordan. Fuheis is one of the few overtly Christian settlements in Central Jordan, and is in close vicinity to Salt and Amman. Fuheis and its residents have been fighting an eco-battle against the cement production at the Cement Factory, previously owned by the government. The battle has not attracted local nor international attention but is certainly one of the most important and longest struggles of this community.
GovernmentFuheis belongs to the Balqa Governerate and has about 20,000 residents. In August 2007, elections took place to elect the Mayor and City Council for Fuheis. Mr. Jeries Sweiss won a convincing majority of the votes to become the new Mayor of Fuheis. GeographyBetween Amman and Salt, Fuheis is situated on several freshwater streams that run through the forested area 20 km west of Amman2. The town is split into two respective halves, the newer section of Al-Allali and the old downtown called Al-balad. Nearby towns include Mahis and Wadi Seer. References
