Pathfinder Alpha Test cover

The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (PFRPG) is a role-playing game announced by Paizo Publishing that extends and modifies the Dungeons & Dragons rules from the 3.5 Edition of the game as published under the Open Game License. The PFRPG would remain backward-compatible with the 3.5 edition, while addressing some issues of that edition.

Announced in March 2008, the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is scheduled to be released in August 2009. A beta-test release of the game is currently available from Paizo Publishing.

The PFRPG will support the Pathfinder adventure paths as well as other works set in the 'Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting'. These products are scheduled to begin to use the PFRPG in August 2009, alongside the final release of the game's core rulebook at Gen Con Indy 2009.1

Goals

Lead Designer Jason Bulmahn described the following as the primary design goals of the Pathfinder RPG:1

Add Options
Buhlman feels that the basic classes are lackluster, and don't provide incentive to stay with a single class for 20 levels of play.1 Pathfinder will add options to the classes.1
Compatibility
Pathfinder RPG is intended to be compatible with the extensive body of expansion materials available for D&D 3.5.1 In most cases this means adding rules instead of subtracting. This compatibility is not perfect, minimal conversion work may be necessary, and sometimes this goal was broken to meet other goals.12
Improve the Game
The game is modified to clean up and streamline problematic parts of the game.1 New options were added.1 Changes were made to improve balance between different game elements.1

Open Playtesting

The Pathfinder Roleplaying game's playtesting is the largest open roleplaying game playtest in the world3. It is being released in a number of steps, and anyone can contribute to the playtesting on Paizo Publishing's messageboards.

Release Schedule

October 2007: Jason Bulmahn began development of an updated system based on D&D 3.5, in part as a reaction to the waning support for the system in the wake of WotC's announcement of the upcoming 4E and in part as a reaction to the desire to improve on weaknesses in the D&D 3.5 game mechanics.

March 2008: Alpha Playtest release 1 was made available as a free PDF download through the Paizo Website.

March 26th, 2008: Paizo Publishing announced that the Alpha Playtest release 1 was downloaded by over 10,000 gamers in 1 week4.

April 2008: Alpha Playtest release 2 was made available as a free PDF download through the Paizo Website, adding additional updated material and incorporating changes in response to playtest feedback.

May 2008: Alpha Playtest release 3 was made available as a free PDF download through the Paizo Website, adding more updated material and incorporating further changes in response to playtest feedback.

July 29th, 2008: Paizo announced that there had been more than 25,000 unique downloads of the Alpha Playtest5.

August 2008: Beta Playtest release was made available as both a free PDF download through the Paizo Website and a $25 softcover book whose first appearance was at the GenCon gaming convention. The Beta is 408 pages long, although the PDF download also includes a 65-page web enhancement that contains spells and magic items which were cut due to space concerns from the printed book. Paizo sold out of the copies of the Beta Playtest which they had taken to Gen Con in about 9 hours6. This Beta release has started a playtest period lasting until February 22nd during which time Design Forums will be opened on the Paizo messageboards approximately every other week, with each forum focusing on a different specific aspect of the Beta7.

October 27th, 2008: An additional web enhancement for the Beta Playtest was published, containing prestige classes for use with the Beta8. It contains many of the prestige classes from the System Reference Document, along with the new Pathfinder Chronicler prestige class.

Rulebooks

  • Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook: Like the Beta Playtest, the final Pathfinder RPG release will make its appearance during the GenCon gaming convention. It is expected to be a 560 page hardcover, and will serve as the basis for future Paizo Adventure Path publications and an OGL stand-alone replacement for the out of print D&D 3.0 and 3.5 books published by Wizards of the Coast. Releases August 2009.
  • Pathfinder Periodical products: In addition, the Pathfinder product lines, including the Adventure Paths, Companion, and Chronicles, will begin using the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules in August 2009. The Pathfinder Modules line will have one PFRPG-compatible product in July and will be entirely PFRPG-compatible afterwards.
