Probainognathia is a taxon of mostly carnivorous cynodonts, and are one of the two main branches of the Eucynodontia infraorder, with the other being the mainly herbivorous Cynognathia. The Probainognathia form into four groups - Probainognathidae, Chiniquodontidae, Trithelodontidae, and Mammaliaformes - which includes the mammals. The earliest and most basal Probainognathian is Lumkuia, from South Africa. Non-mammalian probainognathians lived from Triassic to Jurassic, making this clade one of the longest lived therapsid family.
